Fitness – if it came in a bottle, everybody would have a great body. ~Cher
OUCH! My body is one big ouch right now. The way I’m feeling today, I agree with Cher 🙂
I’m really only one full day into my fitness challenge and I feel like I’m going to die. I went to that Bikram hot yoga class last night.
First of all, it’s been almost two years since I’ve done yoga with any sort of intensity and I was never a hot yoga person; I did power yoga. The power yoga I did was vinyasa flow heated yoga (about 98*F). Hot yoga is the I’m-going-to-pass-out kind of heat… usually around 115*F. I knew it was going to be different, but I don’t think I was fully prepared.
I got there, excited for my first yoga class in a while, and totally ready to try this new style. I thought it would be a lot of the same postures, held longer, in a hotter room. That was true… but I didn’t realize how militaristic it was.
Vinyasa yoga is more meditative and flow oriented, where this (at least to me) felt more like I was being ordered around.
Another major difference was when I went through my 32 oz water bottle, I thought I would be able to leave the room to refill it like I did at my last studio. I was wrong. I shook my bottle at the teacher and motioned towards the door to let her know what I was doing because she shot me a look and SHE SHOOK HER HEAD NO! Really?! I was shocked! Don’t worry, she ended up getting water for me… but I still had to wait the longest five minutes ever. She also did know that I had done yoga with some regularity before, so I’m sure she thought I could handle it. But still, next time you take a yoga class, you may want to ask up front if you can leave the room for water if you think you’re going to pass out… because that’s the point I was at. I lived, but I don’t think instructors should take a person’s immediate need for water lightly!
So I know it sounds like the experience from hell, but I am actually excited to go back! I always really enjoyed the strength and balance poses like Dancer and Bow and dreaded the flexibility oriented poses like Triangle and in hot yoga, there seemed to be a lot more emphasis on those poses. They didn’t skip over Triangle or anything, but the heat also helped me get into those stretches a lot more easily. Plus, as I said before, literally every muscle in my body hurts today, so I know I got a awesome workout!
I am rethinking my training now, though. I think I may need to take a little bit of a slower approach for this week anyway. I was going to run today but I just don’t see that happening. I think this week will be Hot Yoga Monday, Running Wed and Friday, and a few walks sprinkled in between.
