It’s officially my favorite time of year!
It’s kind of amazing I didn’t break out the Christmas decorations today, but I did turn on my Christmas music. So, now that we’re safely beyond Thanksgiving, I thought I’d talk about Christmas music.
Nothing touches my heart and soul like music. I was a high school choir and band nerd and my love of music never subsided. My flute skills on the other hand… but I do still love to sing, not that you’ll ever hear me sing solo or anything.
So, to kick off the Christmas season, I’m going to list my top ten favorite Christmas songs:
- Oh Holy Night (the “fall on your knees” part gets me every time)
- Carol of the bells (the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and the Barlow Girl versions are my favorites)
- Still, Still, Still
- Ave Maria
- I Wander As I Wander
- Angels We Have Heard On High
- Jingle Bells
- Oh Little Town of Bethlehem
- Oh Come All Ye Faithful
- Silent Night
Do my choices make me boring? I love the classics. I love the simplicity and pure beauty of the church hymnal Christmas classics.
I’m sure part of that comes from fond memories of playing and singing some of those while growing up. My high school choir was one of few that got away with singing Christmas music because our teacher felt the Christian songs were the prettiest and, considering she was Jewish, no one was about to argue with her on religious grounds.
I’m not a huge fan of the pop Christmas songs, but that’s probably from working in retail in high school and hearing the same ones over and over (and over and over and over). I do, however, love good remixes on old goodies, like all the songs in Big Daddy Weave’s “Christ is Come” Christmas album, but I’ll save my favorite albums for another day.
What about you? What are your Christmas favorites and why? Or do you dislike the whole holiday genre?
