Did you see the “Business of Being Born”? I did. It changed my life.
Really.
I credit the amazing birth experience I had to that documentary. Also, my desire to become a doula.
I had no idea about the options available to pregnant women until I watched this film. It made me ask questions and seek answers I never even thought about before.
If you haven’t seen it, you’re missing out. You can buy it or stream it on Netflix or even find it at your local library. It’s amazing whether you’re a documentary person or not.
So here’s the exciting part. At least I think so. Executive Producer Ricki Lake and Filmmaker Abby Epstein decided that there were still many questions left unresolved after their first video and decided to put together a follow-up. The release date for “More Business of Being Born”, a four part documentary, is November 8th! I can’t wait!
This film will offer “a practical look at birthing options as well as poignant celebrity birth stories from stars including Alanis Morissette, Gisele Bundchen, Christy Turlington-Burns, Cindy Crawford, Molly Ringwald, Laila Ali, Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Melissa Joan Hart.” (The Business of Being Born official site).
In all honesty, I’m probably the most excited to hear what the featured celebrities have to say. But, I am also extremely excited about a) the Ina May Gaskin interview on The Farm Community in Summertown, Tennessee, b) the section about the various birth options including doulas (obviously), birth centers, and c-sections, AND c) VBAC options.
Now that I’ve hopefully peaked your interest, here’s the trailer:
The opinions expressed in this post were completely mine. No, I was not compensated. I’m just that excited about this film!
Hello! I just started reading your blog but I’ll keep coming back! I’d love to hear how you become a doula. I’m in a similar path right now but I’m getting certified as a childbirth educator for now. Eventually, I’d love to be able to both teach and doula.
I’ve already seen both the interview with Ina May and the fourth one on VBAC options. I streamed them online because I couldn’t wait until the DVD’s came out :). Yep, I was excited too.
I have really wanted to see this movie for a long time, but I get so easily grossed out that I was afraid it would surprise me with scenes of needles, blood, or actual births and then I would puke all over my living room. Honestly, during the births of my own two kids, I was so afraid I would see something gross that I kept my glasses off (I’m completely blind without them, everything is one big, gray blur) the entire time until I was moved into the fresh, clean room after delivery. So, tell me, does the movie have any gross parts, or will I be ok watching it?

Oh my gosh, I should have watched the trailer before writing my original post. I don’t think there would be any way that I would be able to watch the entire thing. Does it come in book form, though? Because I am very interested.
